Why community researchers reach where surveys can't
By People Street · 1 December 2025
For decades, the default tools for understanding a community have been the survey and the focus group. Both have their place, but both share a blind spot. They only hear from the people already willing and able to take part.
Community-led research starts from the opposite end. Instead of asking people to come to the research, the research goes to them, carried by people they already know and trust.
When the person asking the questions is part of the community, conversations go deeper and honesty rises. The result is evidence with a texture and reach that conventional methods rarely achieve.
That is the difference between data about a community and insight from within it, and it is the difference that lets institutions act with confidence.
